The Frist Center for the Visual Arts invites you to join artist, writer and curator Joseph Whitt as he discusses the thoughts and processes behind his work as part of the Frist’s ongoing Artist’s Forum series.
This event will take place on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 at 6:30 P.M. in the Rechter Room, and is free and open to the public.
Joseph Whitt's practice blurs distinctions between the perceived roles of the creative class. His latest project, Serenades, is built on a series of trades with a highly personal pantheon of artistic heroes, including Casey Spooner (of Fischerspooner), Bobby Conn, Momus, Hawnay Troof, Drew Daniel (of Matmos), Jenny Hoyston, Toog, Brendan Fowler, Kelly Kuvo and others. These exchanges often result in clandestine performances or collaborative works designed to win the love and understanding of Whitt's partner, Alton, who describes himself as "not an artist."
In addition to exhibiting his work at several venues of note - Deitch Projects, CRG Gallery (NYC), and Small A Projects (Portland) - Whitt has written feature articles and reviews for publications such as ArtUS, Art Papers, and Useless Magazine. Within the last year, he has curated solo exhibitions by Harmony Korine and Jules de Balincourt, as well as a photography group exhibition that paired Polaroids by Andy Warhol with works by emerging artists Grant Worth and David Horvitz.
Whitt is an honors graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and has taught classes in visual arts at Middle Tennessee State University and New College of Florida, Sarasota. He currently lives in New York and is Director of Programming for Starr Space, a performance art venue in Brooklyn.
